You would like to use String's fantastic messaging features but still place and receive telephone calls through your current carrier. In this article, we'll talk about your various options.
Splitting voice and messaging traffic
This completely depends on the type of carrier for your telephone number. Let's look at the different types of carriers:
- Cellular/Mobile carrier - If this is a mobile phone number, we cannot split the voice and messaging traffic. To use String, you will need to port your number to String and use our calling and messaging features. Please note that you will want to coordinate this with your mobile carrier to add a new number to your phone, if you don't want your mobile service and other key features like iMessage (for iPhones) disrupted.
- VoIP Providers - If your number is with a VoIP provider, we may be able to route just your messaging through String. Contact customer support and we can help you orchestrate this.
- Landline Carriers - Again, we may be able to route messaging for a landline number through String. Contact customer support and we can help.
Still want to use String for your mobile number?
Keep in mind that with String you not only get terrific messaging features but we also offer inbound and outbound calling via softphone using your Internet and cellular data connections both on your computer and through our full-featured mobile application.
You may still need to coordinate with your current mobile carrier to assign a new telephone number to your device.
